Monkey Mia - Western Australia's Coral Coast

Monkey Mia, Shark Bay, Denham - Things to Do

Monkey Mia Dophins - Dolphin Feeding on the shoreline at Monkey Mia Dolphin Resort and Visitor Centre. - Monkey Mia is world renown for the Bottle Nose Dolphins that visit this location giving you a close up encounter with this extrordinary, intelligent and beautiful marine animal.

Bottle nose dolphins have always been in the Monkey Mia area and have visit the beaches since the early 1960s and before that the local fisherman use to feed them the scraps from the days fishing. The dolphins are wild animals and are fed in a manner allowing human contact whislts ensuring they do not become stressed or dependent on hand feeding as did become the case in the early years. Monkey Mia dolphins are managed so they are not dependant on humans for food or survival. They need about 6 kg of fish a day so they are only fed about a third of this amount. The dolphins will therefore still have to hunt for extra food for themselves and also helping their calves to fend for themselves.

The dolphins feeding times are around 8.00am where they are fed by rangers. There is no gaurantee that the dolphins will appear. The most likely period of activity is between 7.30am and 12.00pm (local time) with the peak activity in the first three hours. Dolphins may come in shore at Monkey Mia Reserve to interact with humans at any time of day. A webcam at Monkey Mia (DolphinCam) is operational between 2215 GMT and 0945 GMT (6.15am and 5.45pm WST). Outside these hours, you may wish to view archived images from the DolphinCam, captured daily over the peak activity times. Alternatively, you may choose to see a selection of our favourite grabs.

We stop at the Peron homestead and learn about the days when the park was a sheep station, then its into four wheel drive and along the track to Cape Peron. Stops are made on some of the beaches and cliffs to view the colourful scenery of red sand, white beaches and turquoise sea. Dolphins, dugong, sharks and giant rays can often be seen in the pristine waters. On the way home you can relax with a dip in the "hot tub" which is fed from an artesian bore.
